15 December 2023 – Virtual symposium on Frank Michelman’s recent book, ‘Constitutional Essentials’ (OUP 2022)

This event advances the aims of CAJI’s partnership with Lisbon and Sorbonne and the Constitutional Theory Network.

Professor Michelman’s book is a major contribution to the field, offering a powerful and sophisticated restatement of Rawls’ constitutional theory, exploring its insights and aporias and developing novel interpretations of some of its key claims. At its heart is one of the questions that animates the work of many of the members of the Constitutional Theory Network, namely how constitutional law can help legitimise the institutions of liberal democracy in circumstances of pluralism.

The symposium will take place online on 15 December at 13:30 UK time (08:30am EST). There will be two sessions of around 90 minutes with a short break in the middle. Each session will consist of two sets of comments (of around 15-20 minutes each) and a reply by Professor Michelman, followed by Q&A. Tarun Khaitan, Miguel Nogueira de Brito, Sabrina Zucca-Soest and Dimitrios Kyritsis will be the commentators.

The first session is to be chaired by Theodore Konstadinides. The second session is to be chaired by Yseult Marique.
